Cut your AI spend with AI Gateway's Auto Router
Blog post from Cloudflare
Cloudflare has launched Auto Router in public beta through AI Gateway, allowing organizations to send requests to the cloudflare/auto model endpoint and automatically select an appropriate AI model based on task requirements, expected quality, and cost. Designed to reduce reliance on manual model selection and avoid using expensive frontier models for simpler work, the service reportedly achieved up to 30% savings in Cloudflare’s internal use and delivered an 86.6% success rate on an internal knowledge-work benchmark at lower cost than OpenAI GPT-6 Sol and Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5. The router filters eligible models according to compatibility, policies, billing, health, and access controls, then uses an edge-hosted classifier to assess task category, complexity, ambiguity, stakes, and contextual dependence before ranking candidates through a quality-versus-cost utility calculation. It also considers cache and context-rewriting costs in longer agentic sessions, making model switches less likely when existing session context is valuable. Cloudflare plans to expand supported models and add capabilities such as zero-data-retention filtering, provider-capacity awareness, configurable reasoning levels, and support for additional APIs, while the service remains free during its beta period.
