Cloudflare Workers and Containers now support inbound TCP connections and gRPC

Cloudflare is expanding its Workers platform to better support real-time voice AI applications and gRPC-based client-server communication by enabling inbound TCP connections and enhancing capabilities for gRPC applications. This development introduces a new handler, connect(socket), which allows Workers to accept inbound TCP sockets via Spectrum, Cloudflare's ingress proxy for non-HTTP traffic. This facilitates full-duplex, bidirectional gRPC communication from Cloudflare Containers, enabling low-latency interactions crucial for voice AI and colocated inference applications. Additionally, Cloudflare is offering gRPC-web support, allowing Workers to translate incoming and outgoing gRPC requests, thus enabling seamless integration with existing gRPC servers without requiring code changes from clients. This initiative is currently in private beta, reflecting Cloudflare's commitment to enhancing the versatility of its platform while maintaining performance and security features.
