Building an open Agentic Internet: readable, discoverable, callable, and payable

Cloudflare argues that AI agents are becoming a major new type of web visitor, creating billions of redundant requests while also offering potential commercial value because they act on behalf of paying users. It proposes an “Agentic Internet” built around four capabilities: making content readable through agent-friendly formats such as Markdown for Agents and the lightweight Kitesurf browser, discoverable through AI Search and Agent Engine Optimization, callable through WebMCP and code-based tool access, and payable through wallets, x402, and its Monetization Gateway. The company emphasizes open standards including Web Bot Auth, PACT, MCP, and x402 to let sites authenticate legitimate agents, control access, enable anonymous trust signals, expose actions directly, and charge for content or APIs. Cloudflare presents these tools as a way for publishers, merchants, developers, and nonprofit providers to distinguish productive, compensating agents from extractive scrapers, while avoiding an Internet controlled by a small number of proprietary platforms.
