Cloudflare blocks an almost 2 Tbps multi-vector DDoS attack

On November 13th, 2021, Cloudflare detected and mitigated a massive DDoS attack that peaked at just below 2 Tbps, making it the largest one to date. The attack combined DNS amplification attacks and UDP floods and was launched from around 15,000 bots using Mirai code on IoT devices and unpatched GitLab instances. This incident follows a trend of increased attack intensity, with network-layer DDoS attacks increasing by 44% quarter-over-quarter in Q3. Cloudflare's systems were able to detect the attack within sub-seconds and mitigate it without impacting legitimate traffic.
