What is a software factory?
Blog post from CircleCI
A software factory is a connected system that moves engineering work from planning through coding, testing, review, deployment, and production monitoring using repeatable, increasingly automated workflows. Coding agents increase the volume and speed of software changes, making downstream processes such as CI, testing, security review, and deployment controls potential bottlenecks unless they can scale accordingly. The model combines fast inner-loop validation during implementation with independent outer-loop CI checks in controlled environments before merging or deployment, preserving organizational control over tests, policies, approvals, and traceability. Effective software factories require high CI concurrency, efficient and selective testing, isolated execution, actionable failure information for agents, policy enforcement, secure short-lived credentials, and observability into queue times, failures, cost, and throughput. CircleCI positions its pipelines, CLI, MCP server, testing tools, workflow controls, and deployment capabilities as infrastructure for this approach, enabling agents to receive CI feedback, attempt repairs, and resubmit changes while humans retain judgment over approvals and higher-risk decisions.
