Summary

Decision models are specialized AI systems that select, classify, or score predefined outcomes, providing a middle ground between deterministic application logic and general-purpose LLMs. They can interpret ambiguous language and context for tasks such as routing support requests, prioritizing issues, selecting agent actions or models, and evaluating whether AI-generated content meets defined criteria. Unlike traditional classifiers, newer API-based decision models can support multiple tasks without separate model training, often returning structured outputs and probability estimates that applications can use to trigger review or automation. The approach is most valuable for frequent, bounded decisions where it may improve cost, latency, or reliability, while direct code should remain the preferred method for facts that can be deterministically checked and LLMs remain better suited to generation, detailed reasoning, and nuanced explanations. Organizations should evaluate decision models using labeled real-world data, measuring accuracy, error severity, probability calibration, latency, cost, and integration requirements, then run these evaluations in CI to detect regressions caused by changes to models, prompts, or allowed outcomes. Decision models can also act as automated judges for LLM and agent outputs in CI/CD workflows, supplementing rather than replacing executable tests and human-reviewed validation for consequential or complex decisions.
