CircleCI Smarter Testing: Stop running tests that don't matter
Blog post from CircleCI
CircleCI’s Smarter Testing suite is designed to reduce CI/CD delays caused by running large numbers of tests unaffected by code changes, a problem that can consume substantial compute resources and disrupt developer focus. It offers Intelligent Test Selection, which uses coverage-based test impact analysis to skip tests proven unrelated to feature-branch changes; Dynamic Test Splitting, which balances work across parallel nodes through a shared queue and learned runtime behavior; and Auto Rerun Failed Tests, which automatically retries intermittent failures while allowing persistent failures to fail correctly. CircleCI reports early users achieving up to fourfold faster test runs, with examples of feature-branch pipelines falling from 12–15 minutes to 3–5 minutes. The features are configured through the CircleCI CLI and a test-suites.yml file, with basic test execution and static splitting available free and advanced optimization capabilities offered as paid features. The proposed value centers on faster feedback, reduced unnecessary compute use, improved CI practices, and recovered developer productivity, particularly for teams with large, localized test suites and frequent AI-assisted development iterations.
