5 takeaways from the State of Software Delivery Q3 Pulse report
Blog post from CircleCI
CircleCI’s 2026 State of Software Delivery Q3 Pulse report, based on more than 22 million workflows, finds that AI-assisted development and improved CI performance are increasing coding activity without consistently increasing delivery speed. The top 5% of teams run main-branch workflows 10.4 times more often than the median team, widening a velocity gap as most organizations’ throughput remains largely unchanged. CI fundamentals improved across the industry, with higher main-branch success rates, faster workflow durations, quicker recovery from failures, and more validation jobs per workflow, yet developers are increasingly spreading work across feature branches rather than merging changes faster. Feature-branch activity rose 40% since Q1 and weekend activity rose 65%, while recovery times for feature-branch failures lengthened, suggesting that teams can initiate more work than they can finish. High-performing teams differ by expanding branch activity while also increasing main-branch throughput, aided by greater merge efficiency: median teams require about five CI cycles per shipped change, compared with 3.6 for the top 5% and fewer than three for the top 20 organizations. The report concludes that organizations can better convert AI-driven capacity into delivered software by reducing unnecessary validation cycles, catching failures earlier, shortening feedback loops, improving tools for diagnosing CI issues, and keeping changes small enough to review and merge efficiently.
