Circle Internet Financial, in collaboration with Stanford researchers, introduced the concept of "R-Pools" as a solution to enhance the security and recoverability of DeFi protocols without sacrificing functionality. This idea, presented at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security in Copenhagen on November 30, 2023, involves using R-Pools to exchange unsettled recoverable wrapped tokens for base tokens, thus offering a decentralized insurance-like mechanism. The research explores design challenges and proposes two implementation models—an Automated Market Maker (AMM) and an order book—to address the issue of using recoverable wrapped tokens in DeFi services where immediate spending or settlement is required. This concept builds on the earlier introduction of recoverable wrapper tokens, which provide a programmable mechanism for protecting digital assets against theft and illicit activities, and invites further exploration and collaboration through an open-source repository.
