Why Bitcoin Collateral Needs Stablecoin Liquidity
Blog post from Circle
Circle describes how its cirBTC token and USDC stablecoin are intended to connect institutional Bitcoin holdings with programmable onchain credit, liquidity, and settlement markets. cirBTC is a 1:1 BTC-backed wrapped token that eligible institutions can mint through Circle Mint and use as collateral in supported smart-contract lending protocols without selling their Bitcoin, while USDC can be borrowed against that collateral for dollar-denominated operating capital, trading, inventory financing, or settlement. Circle states that cirBTC reserves are held separately for token holders, custodied through its regulated affiliate structure, and supported by onchain proof-of-reserve data and disclosed Bitcoin addresses. Third-party protocols determine borrowing rates, collateral rules, liquidity limits, and liquidation terms, while cirBTC itself does not produce yield. The model is available on Arc and Ethereum, with Arc positioning USDC as both a native gas and settlement asset and protocols such as Aave and Morpho supplying lending markets. Circle argues that integrating custody, tokenization, borrowing, repayment, and redemption through its infrastructure can reduce operational friction while maintaining neutrality toward exchanges and lending venues.
