As the influx of data into blockchain networks expands beyond financial realms, hybrid smart contracts emerge as innovative solutions in environmental conservation, particularly in regenerative agriculture. These contracts leverage blockchain infrastructure and off-chain data to incentivize and verify eco-friendly initiatives, effectively addressing climate change and empowering local communities. Regenerative agriculture, which integrates diverse land use to enhance ecosystems, offers numerous societal benefits, including increased income and improved nutrition for local populations while sequestering carbon in the soil. To scale these efforts globally, hybrid smart contracts provide a mechanism for managing resources efficiently and transparently, thus encouraging participation from governments, large corporations, local businesses, and individuals. The Green World Campaign, supported by the Chainlink Community Grant, exemplifies this approach with its Automated Incentives for Regenerative Stewardship (AIRS) project. AIRS uses satellite data to automate and reward regenerative practices, reducing operational costs and enhancing transparency. This initiative, piloted in Kenya, aims to expand regenerative agriculture and improve living conditions in impoverished rural areas, ultimately contributing to the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
