Why Business Context Matters More Than Model Choice for Enterprise AI Agents
Blog post from CData
Business context, rather than raw data access or model size alone, is presented as a key factor in enabling AI agents to accurately use enterprise data across systems such as CRM, cloud warehouses, and ITSM platforms. In a CData benchmark of 27 models completing read and write tasks, agents supplied with searchable plain-language context entries succeeded in 82% of 405 runs, while raw-access agents often spent their turns exploring schemas and hit a 40-turn limit without completing tasks. Context entries describing data objects, business metrics, eligibility rules, and cross-system joins reduced median tool calls from 40 to 8, tokens from 489,000 to 89,000, median costs from $0.27 to $0.09 per run, and wall-clock time from 176 to 94 seconds. Read tasks achieved 87% success with context, while write-task accuracy also improved substantially, though incorrect writes remained possible, reinforcing the need for controls such as scoped permissions, approvals, and review queues. The suggested approach is to identify common agent failures, document relevant tables and business rules in concise machine-readable entries, provide guidance for cross-system joins, and measure results before and after implementation.
