The Autonomy Spectrum: What Agents Need at Every Level
Blog post from CData
AI agent workflows are best understood along an “autonomy spectrum” rather than as a choice between LLM-driven processes and code execution. Exploratory, non-deterministic steps rely on LLM reasoning for tasks such as schema discovery, qualitative assessment, and ad hoc analysis, while deterministic steps use fixed, auditable logic for repeatable operations such as record creation, scheduled reporting, and task generation. Many workflows occupy a hybrid middle ground, combining structured actions with bounded AI judgment, such as data-quality checks, API parameter selection, and request triage. The appropriate level of autonomy should be determined step by step based on factors including input variability, error costs, audit requirements, execution frequency, and whether coding would reduce quality. To support workflows across this spectrum, the article argues that organizations need data architecture providing broad connectivity through LLM and code-oriented interfaces, access to data and business metadata for context, and governance controls such as permissions, auditing, and scoped access.
