Summary

The July 28, 2026 Model Context Protocol Release Candidate shifts MCP from protocol-level statefulness toward a stateless architecture, while also adding capabilities such as MCP Apps, Tasks, extensibility, and authorization and transport improvements. Previously, MCP used initialization handshakes and session identifiers that could tie requests to specific server instances, requiring sticky sessions and complicating load balancing, scaling, and failure recovery. Under the new approach, requests carry client and protocol details in metadata, server capabilities can be discovered on demand, and any healthy server can process an individual request. Application state, including conversation context, authentication, carts, workflows, and preferences, is not removed but is managed explicitly through identifiers returned and resubmitted by applications. Interactive workflows can pause for additional input and resume through encoded request state rather than persistent connections. New routing headers, caching metadata, and W3C Trace Context support are intended to improve traffic management, caching, observability, and troubleshooting. The change aligns MCP with cloud-native patterns used in REST APIs, Kubernetes, serverless platforms, and API gateways, potentially making enterprise AI agents that access CRM, ERP, support, warehouse, and collaboration systems more scalable, resilient, and easier to operate.
