SQL Server Replication Types – When to Use Each One
Blog post from CData
SQL Server replication supports distributed data, real-time analytics, and resilient application architectures through four primary models: transactional replication for near-real-time, ordered one-way changes; merge replication for bidirectional synchronization after offline work; snapshot replication for scheduled full copies of slowly changing data; and peer-to-peer replication for multi-master, geographically distributed high-availability systems. Selecting the model depends on requirements for latency, write patterns, connectivity, data volume, conflict handling, and operational cost. The material presents CData Sync as a low-code alternative or complement to native replication, using capabilities such as change data capture, scheduled jobs, transformations, compression, cloud warehouse connections, monitoring dashboards, alerts, authentication controls, encryption, and audit logging. It also recommends validating row counts and latency before production deployment, monitoring lag, errors, and bandwidth continuously, and applying security measures such as TLS, role-based access, and data masking.
