Summary

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 that enables LLMs to access external tools and data through a unified interface, but its relative immaturity presents security, operational, and adoption challenges. Key risks include prompt injection, tool poisoning and shadowing, data exfiltration, insufficient built-in authorization controls, and unclear identity attribution, while technical concerns involve scalable transport, context-window consumption from numerous tool definitions, inconsistent error handling, and governance of tool lifecycles. Although adoption expanded rapidly in 2025 across major AI platforms, enterprise use can be complicated by incomplete ecosystem coverage, limited documentation, and uncertainty around the evolving standard. MCP’s transfer to the Linux Foundation’s Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025 established vendor-neutral governance and reduced concerns about control by a single company. CData Connect AI is presented as a managed complementary platform that centralizes access to hundreds of sources and addresses certain gaps through identity-based permissions, OAuth and SSO, role-based controls, audit logs, standardized SQL errors, and compliance certifications, though it cannot solve protocol-level issues such as model reasoning, token consumption, or all implementation inconsistencies.
