Map of the Month: Landmine Removal in Nagorno-Karabakh
Blog post from Carto
The HALO Trust, a UK-based NGO, has been working in Nagorno-Karabakh since 2000 to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance, with the goal of protecting lives and restoring livelihoods. The region, which is part of Azerbaijan but disputed by Armenia, has been affected by decades of conflict, resulting in around 20,000 deaths and hundreds of thousands displaced. Landmines have had a devastating impact on the local population, particularly children, who are disproportionately affected. To visualize and summarize data, HALO uses CARTO technology, which allows for near real-time updates and dynamic analysis, enabling the organization to demonstrate its impact through mine clearance programs in 16 countries worldwide.
