In September 2021, a fuel shortage in the UK led to panic buying, with media reports attributing it to a driver shortage caused by Brexit and COVID-19. An analysis of petrol station data revealed that long queues were indeed caused by legitimate shortages, but also by panic buying fueled by overzealous press reports. The study found that dwell times increased significantly starting from September 29, with some areas experiencing more pronounced increases than others. A spatio-temporal analysis showed that the pattern was not uniform across the city and even towards the end of the selected time period, sudden increases in dwell time were observed at various locations. The data also revealed coordination between petrol stations, especially those close to each other, which may indicate social behaviors such as people congregating around stations with long queues.
