CARTO enters the Agentic GIS era with its founder as CEO
Blog post from Carto
CARTO announced at the Spatial Data Science Conference in New York that founder and Chief Strategy Officer Javier de la Torre will become CEO on November 1, succeeding Luis Sanz, who has led the company since 2019 and will remain on its board. The planned transition follows CARTO’s evolution into a cloud-native spatial analytics platform and reflects its focus on “Agentic GIS,” which uses AI agents to make governed spatial analysis more accessible across organizations while keeping data in existing cloud environments. CARTO also highlighted growing public-sector demand for sovereign geospatial infrastructure in Europe, positioning its CARTO SDI platform and the open Portolan specification as tools for institutions seeking greater control over spatial data and infrastructure. The company said its customers and partners can expect continuity in its team, roadmap, and support, while de la Torre will lead the next phase of AI-driven and sovereign spatial-data initiatives.
