Agentic GIS in ChatGPT with CARTO MCP Server
Blog post from Carto
Connecting the CARTO MCP Server to ChatGPT enables authenticated users to create and edit CARTO maps, design, run, review, and schedule spatial-analysis workflows, perform batch operations, and carry out selected account administration tasks through natural-language prompts, with interactive maps rendered inline. Queries remain in the organization’s connected data warehouse and retain existing user permissions, roles, row-level security, and activity logging, while CARTO Agent Skills can provide consistent geospatial methods and cartographic practices. Full read/write access requires ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Edu, whereas Pro users receive read and fetch capabilities; setup requires a CARTO SPA OAuth client and a user-defined OAuth configuration because ChatGPT’s default CIMD registration is incompatible, with sign-ins expiring after 24 hours. Examples include generating hurricane-tracking maps and reusable exposure-analysis workflows, while the CARTO CLI and coding agents such as Codex support repository-based development and deployment of spatial apps and more complex, versioned analytical pipelines.
