A trip back in time to 1940s New York City has been made possible through the Welcome to 1940s New York project, which is making a 1943 local market analysis document available online. The document, published by four NYC newspapers in 1943, included hundreds of photos and color-coded maps portraying the geographic patterns of monthly rent levels across the city. The website provides an interactive map displaying information on 116 neighborhoods covered in the document, with statistics and narratives about the neighborhoods also available. The site offers a rich picture of life in New York more than seventy years ago, and is still a work in progress, according to project leader Steven Romalewski. The online platform has been praised by publications such as The New York Times and Curbed for its unique insight into the city's past.
