Air Force to AgTech: An Interview with Barn Owl

As CEO of Barn Owl, Josh Phifer is driven by a desire to solve real problems in agriculture and asset management through remote monitoring solutions. He started his journey as an Air Force fighter pilot and later pursued an MBA from Wharton, where he developed an IoT startup for monitoring agricultural resources. However, the initial product failed due to over-reliance on technology rather than customer feedback, leading to a pivot towards building a simple and affordable remote surveillance solution using cameras instead of IoT sensors. The company has since grown through bootstrapping and partnering with cellular data providers, and Josh's Air Force background has taught him valuable skills such as efficiency, decision-making, and communication. As a mentor to an accelerator and on the council for Peak Startup, Josh aims to help other entrepreneurs get started by sharing his experiences and expertise. He plans to expand Barn Owl's offerings through 5G capabilities, while leveraging Bubble to provide more documentation and tutorials for customers and developers alike.
