Beyond compliance to readiness: What EN 301 549 v4.1.1 means for your accessibility strategy
Blog post from BrowserStack
EN 301 549 v4.1.1, finalized by ETSI and delivered to the European Commission, updates European ICT accessibility guidance to WCAG 2.2 Level AA for websites, native software, and electronic documents, adding requirements for unobscured keyboard focus, alternatives to drag gestures, minimum touch-target sizes, consistent help, reduced redundant data entry, and accessible authentication while removing the obsolete parsing criterion. The standard also emphasizes support for platform accessibility preferences such as font scaling, high contrast, dark mode, and browser zoom, and includes an annex connecting technical requirements to European Accessibility Act obligations. Although EN 301 549 v3.2.1 remains the legal presumption-of-conformity baseline until v4.1.1 is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, the text notes that procurement organizations and enterprises are already adopting WCAG 2.2 expectations. It argues that organizations need automated, guided, and real-device testing to assess dynamic interactions, assistive technologies, and operating-system preferences, presenting BrowserStack Accessibility as a platform intended to support testing, governance, and CI/CD integration across web and mobile products.
