What is a unified LLM API? One interface for every model
Blog post from Braintrust
A unified LLM API acts as an intermediary between applications and model providers, allowing developers to use one client structure, endpoint, credential path, and normalized request and response format across models such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, and hosted or self-managed providers. It translates provider-specific schemas, parameters, streaming events, errors, and usage data while often adding gateway functions such as credential management, logging, caching, rate limits, regional routing, retries, failover, cost attribution, and tracing. This approach can simplify experimentation, reduce provider-specific integration work, centralize observability and spending, and make model changes largely configuration-based. However, it does not make models fully interchangeable: native parameters, multimodal inputs, tool behavior, context limits, metadata, quotas, pricing, and output quality can differ substantially, while translation may silently omit or alter unsupported features. Applications requiring provider-native capabilities may need passthrough parameters, specialized headers, native SDK calls, or other controlled escape hatches, and teams should evaluate candidate models against representative production cases before switching.
