Summary

Braintrust introduced Nitro, an asynchronous query engine for Brainstore designed to accelerate investigation of production agent traces stored in object storage, where large volumes of concurrent full-text searches can otherwise be constrained by network latency, CPU, and memory. Built around Tantivy’s index format, Nitro separates storage-read and compute scheduling, allowing many object-store requests to overlap without overloading compute workers, while also reducing requests through aggressive prefetching, coalescing nearby reads, and early filtering for phrase searches. In a three-day A/B test covering more than one million queries, Nitro made full-text searches over twice as fast on average and improved other queries by 15%, with selected cold-cache production workloads improving by roughly two to more than four times. A separate synthetic benchmark on 40 GB of text showed strong phrase-search performance relative to two unnamed observability vendors, although one competitor was faster on a span-count aggregate query and aggregate performance remains an identified area for improvement. Nitro is enabled automatically for Braintrust SaaS and BYOC customers and is available to self-hosted users from dataplane version 2.15.
