The agent lives inside the machine
Blog post from Boxd
boxd advocates an architecture in which each AI agent runs directly inside its own persistent, isolated Linux virtual machine rather than controlling a separate sandbox through remote tool APIs. It argues that this design reduces command serialization and latency, allows agents to access files, processes, logs, and local services directly, and makes VM-level persistence, hibernation, and forking more effective because snapshots include both the environment and the agent’s ongoing state. Each box uses KVM-based hardware isolation while providing the agent root access within its VM, SSH access for developers, and the ability to choose models independently through network calls. The company acknowledges that external, structured tool interfaces can offer stronger control, auditing, and predictability for less capable models, but contends that increasing model autonomy will favor agents operating on full computers. Its longer-term vision is for agents to coordinate, clone, specialize, and compare work across many isolated machines, with computing energy rather than orchestration architecture becoming the principal constraint.
