Why context matters for enterprise AI agents – and how you can use it to gain an edge
Blog post from Box
Reliable enterprise AI depends less on choosing the most capable language model than on providing accurate, permission-aware context, including documents, structured records, metadata, relationships, provenance, and task history. The discussion distinguishes context infrastructure, which stores information; context engineering, which retrieves and assembles relevant information for a task; and context architecture, which establishes permissions, memory, guardrails, and human oversight. Because enterprise information is largely unstructured and excessive context can increase cost, latency, and model confusion, organizations should add tools such as search, metadata, taxonomies, workflows, ontologies, and knowledge graphs only as task complexity, risk, and relationship-based reasoning require. Model benchmarks measure comparative capabilities but do not establish whether a particular deployment is secure, auditable, accurate, or compliant, making production audits, source citations, access controls, and human review important for high-stakes uses. A nine-level maturity framework ranges from simple document summaries to enterprise-scale monitoring and impact analysis, while Box presents its content management, search, extraction, workflow, governance, and emerging graph capabilities as support for progressively more governed and relationship-aware AI applications.
