Box has introduced a new markdown representation feature that enhances the processing of documents for AI applications by preserving their structure and meaning, addressing a common challenge developers face when integrating documents with Large Language Models (LLMs). Unlike traditional text extraction methods that flatten text and strip it of formatting and structure, markdown representations maintain headers, tables, lists, and emphasis, making it easier for LLMs to understand the document's context and improve the accuracy of analysis and summaries. This feature creates alternative assets for files stored in Box accounts, allowing developers to request markdown representations and download them once generated, with support for a wide range of document formats, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and PDFs. While Box is yet to update its SDKs to fully integrate this feature, developers can already start utilizing markdown representations via the Box MCP Server to improve AI analysis, generate structured outputs, and engage in interactive document exploration.
