NRI locks down security and speeds up progress

Nomura Research Institute, a Japanese think tank and IT services company handling substantial confidential customer and management data, is expanding its long-standing use of Box to support AI-enabled work while strengthening zero-trust security and compliance. After adopting Box for centralized content management in 2017 and Box Shield for threat detection and access controls, NRI implemented Box Shield Pro to automate document classification, addressing inconsistent and incomplete manual labeling while supporting legal requirements for managing trade secrets. The system uses AI to assign one of four labels—Top Secret, Confidential, Internal Use Only, or Public—when files are saved, presents the result for employee approval, and applies label-based restrictions on sharing and downloads, with planned manager approval for sensitive categories. NRI combines automated monitoring of suspicious behavior, including large downloads around employee departures, with Splunk dashboards, notifications, supervisor review, and employee awareness measures. Emphasizing human-in-the-loop decision-making, the company views AI as a way to raise security standards without unnecessarily disrupting work, and plans to add real-time ransomware and AI threat detection to identify abnormal activity earlier and enable faster response.
