How we designed Mark for Offline in Box Drive

Box Drive introduced a significant feature called Mark for Offline (MFO), enabling users to access files offline by syncing them for local storage, akin to the earlier Box Sync feature. Users can navigate their entire Box directory, with files being downloaded and cached as necessary, while MFO ensures that selected folders, rather than individual files, are downloaded for offline access and remain stored locally without being removed from the cache. The design decisions behind MFO emphasize simplicity and consistency; for example, if a parent folder is marked for offline, any new subfolders automatically inherit this status, regardless of who created them or where they are moved. The system maintains offline access even if folders are relocated, and any movement into an MFO folder results in the content becoming MFO, while moving into an unMFO folder does not change its status. Additionally, changes to the MFO state of a folder apply to its entire subtree to avoid confusion and ensure accessibility. These decisions aim to balance user experience and functional integrity, ensuring that once content is marked for offline access, it remains reliably available.
