Matrix builds in GitHub Actions run jobs in parallel across combinations of configurations such as operating systems, language versions, CPU architectures, databases, browsers, API versions, and performance loads, reducing duplicate workflow definitions while broadening compatibility testing. A typical matrix can test a web application across Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS with multiple Node.js versions, automatically creating one job per combination and making environment-specific failures easier to identify.
