React Native OTA updates: best practices for shipping safely
Blog post from Bitrise
Over-the-air updates enable React Native teams to deliver JavaScript fixes without waiting for app-store reviews, but require disciplined release practices because incompatible bundles can crash older native app versions. Teams should determine whether OTA is limited to hotfixes, used between store releases, or supports continuous deployment, while ensuring updates comply with platform policies and target compatible native versions through semantic versioning and preferably explicit, closed version ranges. Recommended practices include installing updates quietly on the next launch except for critical mandatory fixes, avoiding launch-blocking update checks, using separate deployment channels and controlled CI-based production publishing, and rolling out gradually while monitoring crashes, update events, and rollback rates. When problems arise, teams should assess whether a validated forward fix is safer than a rollback, especially where application state or database changes are involved. OTA packages should be code-signed, signing keys protected, deployment changes audited, and delta updates used to reduce download size and installation time.
