Jeppesen ForeFlight: taking mobile to new heights in aviation
Blog post from Bitrise
Jeppesen ForeFlight, formed by combining Jeppesen’s aeronautical-data heritage with ForeFlight’s mobile technology, develops electronic flight bag applications that provide pilots and crews with weather, navigation, and flight-planning information, making reliable mobile releases central to its safety-focused operations. Its engineering team replaced a self-hosted TeamCity setup, which required maintaining on-premises Mac build agents and frequent Xcode updates, with Bitrise CI and later Bitrise Build Hub running through GitHub Actions. According to Director of Engineering Nathan Hillyer, the change reduced infrastructure maintenance, supported growth toward roughly 50 build agents, improved developer confidence in build results, and enabled the small DevOps team to focus on build performance, automated testing, and developer experience rather than server upkeep. The company reports that ephemeral runners, rapid Xcode image availability, hardware upgrades, and build caching have reduced failures and saved 20 to 30 build hours monthly, while tests of GitHub-hosted runners exposed stability and cost concerns at its scale. As AI increases code volume, Jeppesen ForeFlight is expanding automated quality gates, modular builds, and persona-based testing to preserve validation and safety standards, with the goal of making its software experience predictable, reliable, and “uneventful” for aviation users.
