Designing Gradle Task IO for Build Caching: what I didn’t see coming
Blog post from Bitrise
Bitrise’s Gradle Task IO feature was designed to help developers diagnose build cache misses by revealing why tasks re-executed and which inputs changed between builds. Developed by a solo designer amid limited UX precedents, dense technical data, infrastructure costs, and constrained user research, the feature adopted a compare-first workflow after research showed engineers typically investigate slow builds against faster ones. Its final release includes a Task Inputs view for examining slow, uncached tasks and their properties and files, plus a Compare page that highlights differences between two build invocations, including changed properties, file deltas, dependency updates, and AI-generated summaries. The project emphasized that effective developer-tool design requires close collaboration with engineering, awareness of backend and storage limitations, and iterative refinement based on real-world use.
