Why Azion Moved to Individual npm Packages in a Monorepo
Blog post from Azion
Azion is transitioning from a monolithic library model to a distributed monorepo architecture to enhance developer experience, project performance, and sustainability by migrating to individual npm packages. Previously, installing Azion's main package meant receiving a variety of modules and dependencies, leading to larger installations, confusing versioning, unnecessary updates, and inefficient CI/CD processes. With the new structure, each library module is published independently under the @aziontech namespace, allowing for more modular, lightweight, and predictable installations. This change addresses the limitations of the previous model by enabling semantic versioning per package, reducing installation size, isolating dependencies for better security, and streamlining CI/CD processes to focus only on changed packages. The transition to individual packages offers better tree-shaking, smaller bundles, more control over updates, and compatibility with modern monorepo tools, while providing clearer documentation and changelogs for each module. This strategic shift respects developers' choices, aligns with contemporary practices, and aims to deliver a more efficient and scalable development experience for Azion users.
