Summary

The AuthZed customer experienced a significant increase in permission requests, leading to full-second latency at the 95th percentile, and ultimately discovering that their database had insufficient capacity to handle these spikes. With the help of AuthZed's extensive observability toolkit, they were able to identify the root cause as inefficient ACL filtering that fanned out individual checks too quickly for the allocated capacity, and implemented a solution by moving from fanout CheckPermission calls to BulkCheck, which led to significant latency reduction and improved cache efficiency. These improvements are now available in SpiceDB v1.28!
