Where ChatGPT Archived Chats Go, How to Get Them Back, and What Archiving Really Does
Blog post from Atlas Cloud
Archived ChatGPT conversations are hidden from the regular sidebar rather than deleted, and can generally be found through Settings, Data controls, and Archived chats on the web or mobile apps, where users can search, unarchive, or delete individual threads. Archiving does not alter a chat’s retention period, search availability, memory-related treatment, or account status, although archiving a chat associated with scheduled tasks may pause those tasks. The guide cautions that Delete all chats may also remove archived conversations permanently, while deleted chats cannot be restored and are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. It also notes that seemingly missing chats may instead be located in projects, locked-chat areas, another account or workspace, temporary-chat sessions, or older mobile history accessible through search. For users wishing to continue an old conversation outside ChatGPT, it describes copying the thread into Atlas Cloud’s GPT-6 Luna playground or API, though that service can access only text explicitly provided by the user.
