An alpha channel is a fourth pixel component that controls opacity, typically ranging from 0 for fully transparent to 255 for fully opaque in 8-bit images, enabling soft edges, shadows, and translucent effects. PNG and WebP support full per-pixel alpha transparency, while GIF uses only binary transparent-or-opaque pixels, JPG supports no transparency, and SVG generally has no inherent backdrop because it describes vector shapes and their opacity separately. Measurements of seven AI-generated PNG cutouts found that partially transparent pixels accounted for only 0.7% to 2.2% of each image, usually forming a narrow anti-aliased edge, though transparent-looking materials such as veils may still be rendered as opaque with background colors incorporated into the subject.
