We Tested 10 AI Photo Editors and Counted How Many AI Models Each One Lets You Swap
Blog post from Atlas Cloud
A September 2026 comparison of ten AI photo editors argues that model selection is a key differentiator because changing models can address failed edits more effectively than repeatedly rewriting prompts. Atlas Cloud, which publishes the comparison, ranks first for its browser-based Image Edit workspace with 22 selectable models and per-edit billing, while Adobe Photoshop is positioned for professional retouching through selections, layers, masks, and a picker containing Firefly and partner models. Pixlr is highlighted as the lowest-cost subscription option, Picsart for social-media-oriented creation, and Photopea for free browser-based PSD editing, although Photopea’s local-processing claims do not fully extend to its server-based AI requests. The remaining tools, including Canva, Fotor, BeFunky, Luminar Neo, and Topaz Photo, are described as useful for narrower workflows but generally offer limited or unclear model control. The comparison also examines free-tier restrictions, watermark policies, credit allowances, pricing, user ratings, and privacy claims, finding that many vendors name the models they use without letting customers choose among them. It concludes that users should evaluate editors by their recovery options after an unsatisfactory result, especially for challenging materials such as hair, reflections, glass, fabric, and product photography.
