GIMP Remove Background Alternative: The White Shirt Fuzzy Select Cannot Isolate, Cut Free in One Click

GIMP’s Fuzzy Select and Select by Color tools rely on pixel color similarity, making them effective for subjects that contrast clearly with their backgrounds but poorly suited to cases such as a white shirt against a white wall, where no threshold can reliably distinguish subject from background. In tests cited by Atlas Cloud, its free browser-based AI background remover separated the white-on-white subject in one run without an account or watermark, producing a PNG with a narrow semi-transparent edge band, while GIMP’s Foreground Select could also handle hair but required more manual steps and may be slower or less stable on large Windows images. Both approaches struggled with sheer fabric: the AI retained the veil’s outline but made it opaque, whereas GIMP could preserve translucency through a manually painted gray layer mask. GIMP remains more capable for detailed mask refinement, layered compositing, paths, brushes, offline editing, and repeated image work, while the browser tool is positioned as a quick one-image-at-a-time option for difficult subject-background color matches before further editing in GIMP.
