EU AI Act compliance for AI agents: a practical engineering guide
Blog post from Arize
The EU AI Act imposes phased obligations on AI systems, with transparency duties already in effect and high-risk requirements for uses such as credit scoring, insurance pricing, recruitment, education, and critical infrastructure due from 2 December 2027, following a previous deadline extension. High-risk classification depends on an agent’s intended purpose rather than its use of an LLM, while responsibilities vary between providers, which build or market systems, and deployers, which use them. Key requirements include automatic event logging, at least six months of log retention, human oversight, post-market monitoring, incident reporting, supply-chain agreements, AI disclosures, and meaningful explanations for affected individuals. The guidance argues that these requirements largely align with production AI engineering practices, particularly tracing model calls, prompts, tool use, human reviews, evaluations, and prompt versions. It emphasizes that compliance evidence must be protected for integrity, completeness, retention, and privacy, with special attention to where data and traces are hosted and who controls them under EU law and GDPR. Using an illustrative credit-assistant example, it presents evroc’s EU-hosted infrastructure and Arize Phoenix or AX observability tools as components that can help organizations retain auditable records, mask personal data, detect policy failures in live systems, and preserve decision histories, while noting that technical measures alone do not establish legal compliance.
