Are agent harnesses dying? What harness distillation changes
Blog post from Arize
Agent harnesses are not becoming obsolete, but research on “harness distillation” suggests that general behaviors such as procedural checking and simple corrective workflows can increasingly be trained directly into models, reducing the need for some hand-built scaffolding. The Harness-Zero study fine-tuned a small model on runs in which a stronger model made minimal corrections to its proposed actions, producing a distilled model that outperformed both its original version and the same model using a specialized harness on average, although it still lagged in knowledge-intensive chemistry tasks and retained a minimal tool loop. The results indicate that training on corrections close to a model’s own capabilities is more effective than training on stronger models’ successful outputs, fully harness-completed runs, or ideal answers. Harnesses remain important for application-specific tools, proprietary data, domain expertise, context management, user needs, and environmental constraints, but their contents must evolve as model capabilities improve. To prevent automated or manual harness development from overfitting to narrow evaluations, developers should track model and harness versions, log interventions and corrections, test components independently when new models arrive, retain only features that still improve results, and use accumulated traces to guide future model training or harness redesign.
