PubNub Had a Triangle of Pain. Here's How They Broke Out of It.
Blog post from Archera
PubNub, a real-time messaging provider operating across five AWS regions, sought to reduce cloud costs despite highly variable and difficult-to-forecast workloads managed by a small FinOps team. After an earlier multi-year commitment became partially unnecessary following an engineering change, the company adopted Archera’s insured commitments, which offer 30-day guaranteed terms and transfer the financial risk of underused reservations through rebates or releases. PubNub organized its spending into a three-layer model: long-term commitments for predictable baseline infrastructure, short-term guaranteed commitments for uncertain but anticipated demand, and on-demand capacity for unpredictable traffic spikes. Archera reports that this approach reduced PubNub’s on-demand spend toward a sub-5% target, generated more than $500,000 in first-year savings, and reduced the need for lengthy cross-functional commitment decisions.
