The Elastic License v2 (ELv2) is a simple, permissive open-source license that has been chosen by the Apollo team to govern the use of their graph composition technology, Apollo Federation 2. The new license allows users to freely modify and distribute the software as long as they stay within three limitations: providing federation tooling as a managed service, circumventing license key functionality or removing features protected by license keys, and removing or obscuring any licensing notices. Most of the community and customers will not be affected by this change, and Apollo Federation 0.x libraries will remain MIT-licensed to allow for gradual migration at their own pace. The goal is to provide a friction-free development experience while championing a single, standard open license with simple language and minimal limitations necessary.
