A Working API Call Is Not a Production-Ready Integration

An experiment evaluating 96 AI-generated API integrations for PayPal, Maxio, and Twilio found that coding agents consistently produced working API calls but often fell short of production readiness in areas such as error handling, resilience, security, testing, and maintainability. Using an ASP.NET reference application and several context conditions—including web search, OpenAPI specifications, documentation tools, and the APIMatic Context Plugin—the study measured integrations with a 100-point readiness benchmark that simulated failures such as invalid credentials, malformed responses, timeouts, rate limits, and schema changes. Average readiness under conventional approaches was about 74, while the APIMatic Context Plugin achieved an average of 97, with higher consistency across APIs. The post attributes weaker results to agents spending substantial effort discovering API behavior through web searches and sandbox probing, relying on potentially incomplete information, and treating a successful request as sufficient completion. It argues that API providers can improve agent-generated integrations by supplying authoritative, first-party packages containing API and SDK knowledge, implementation guidance, readiness checklists, and testing instructions, shifting more integration design responsibility from API consumers to providers.
