Australian government and Anthropic sign MOU for AI safety and research

Anthropic has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Australian government to collaborate on AI safety research and advance the nation's National AI Plan, marking a significant step in cooperative AI development. During a visit to Canberra, Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, formalized the agreement with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, emphasizing the shared commitment to AI safety and research. As part of this collaboration, Anthropic will provide AUD$3 million in partnerships with Australian research institutions to utilize its AI model, Claude, for enhancing disease diagnosis and treatment and support computer science education. The MOU includes sharing the Anthropic Economic Index with the Australian government to monitor AI adoption and its economic impact, focusing on vital sectors like natural resources, agriculture, healthcare, and financial services. The initiative also aims to bolster AI education and training in the workforce. Additionally, Anthropic is extending its AI for Science program to Australia with an investment in Claude API credits to support institutions like the Australian National University and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in tackling challenges in genomics and precision medicine. This collaboration reflects Australia's investment in AI safety and positions the country as a key partner in responsible AI development while supporting the objectives of its National AI Plan.
