The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Anthropic a two-year agreement with a $200 million ceiling to prototype advanced AI capabilities for enhancing national security. This partnership, facilitated through the Department's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, involves developing AI models tailored for defense operations, focusing on reliability, interpretability, and responsible usage. Anthropic's Claude Gov models, specifically designed for national security, are already integrated into defense and intelligence workflows, with capabilities to process and analyze large datasets. The collaboration aims to anticipate and mitigate adversarial AI uses while promoting responsible AI adoption and strengthening democratic values. This initiative builds on Anthropic's existing public sector deployments, including partnerships with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Palantir, and is supported by infrastructure from Amazon Web Services.
