What is a payment facilitator? A guide to the payfac model and how to use it
Blog post from Airwallex
Payment facilitators, or payfacs, enable platforms, marketplaces, and SaaS businesses to offer payment acceptance and embedded financial services without requiring each user or seller to establish an individual merchant account. Operating through a master account with sub-merchant accounts, they centralise functions such as payment processing, onboarding, payouts, compliance, fraud prevention, and security, reducing the need to manage multiple providers and integrations. Payfacs can support international growth through multi-currency transactions and local payment methods, while also enabling businesses to white-label payment experiences and monetise services through processing fees or foreign-exchange markups. Selecting a provider involves defining payment objectives, assessing implementation needs, and comparing features, pricing, compliance support, and technical capabilities. Unlike processors, which transmit payment data for transaction authorisation, and acquirers, which provide merchant accounts and assume card-network risk, payfacs coordinate broader payment infrastructure and merchant-management services; however, they may involve higher fees, delayed transfers, account restrictions, limited customisation, and provider-related operational risks.
