Wero is now available on Airwallex
Blog post from Airwallex
Wero is a pan-European, bank-backed instant account-to-account payment scheme launched by the European Payments Initiative in 2024, consolidating local methods including Germany’s Giropay, Belgium and Luxembourg’s Payconiq, and eventually France’s Paylib and the Netherlands’ iDEAL. Available in Germany and Belgium, with a French rollout planned for October 2026, Wero had 55 million registered users as of June 2026 and enables shoppers to authorize direct bank-account payments through their banking or Wero app without entering card details or IBANs. Airwallex, a principal EPI member with a direct Wero integration, says eligible merchants worldwide can accept Wero without a European entity, settle in euros, and use a Shopify plugin. The service is positioned as offering faster settlement and lower costs than cards, alongside features such as one-click pre-consented payments, recurring billing, payment on delivery, real-time fraud scoring, and point-of-sale support. Airwallex also expects Wero’s planned interoperability with other European payment methods by 2027 to broaden its relevance as instant bank payments gain adoption.
