The AI ROI question CFOs can't answer (yet)
Blog post from Airwallex
A Forrester study commissioned by Airwallex of 1,279 finance decision-makers found that although 74% view AI integration as a top priority over the next year, 40% struggle to establish a clear business case beyond short-term productivity improvements. Finance leaders face pressure to adopt AI for faster financial closes, reforecasting, and risk detection, yet variable costs, gradual benefits, and overlapping technology or organisational changes make conventional ROI assessments difficult. Concerns about falling behind faster-modernising competitors, cited by 42% of respondents, highlight the potential cost of delaying adoption, while limited team experience and resistance to change remain important barriers. The discussion argues that organisations should begin with concrete finance problems rather than AI tools, strengthen unified data and financial infrastructure across entities and systems, and develop AI experience early so measurement approaches can evolve alongside the value created.
